With no exaggeration the United States of America can be called the world's telecommunication center. Here the majority of up-to-date technologies are either born, or successfully developed and enriched. The market itself is at the peak of its maturity with all its sectors being highly progressive and more or less equally developed. While the growth in some spheres becomes slower due to the maximal point of their progress, other sectors continue steady development and provide base for further discoveries. Fixed-line telephony services have largely been slowed in their distribution, but the operators have found where to benefit from the infrastructure, making broadband network development their core purpose. Diachronically, the dominating position in home fixed-line services has belonged to AT&T, which has been a telecom monopoly for a long time. The company, however, was split into several subsidiaries and privatized, leaving place for competition in the market. Competitors are seen not only in the sphere of major fixed-line operators, but in the new technologies, coming to the market. To be safe from considerable loss, the main operators had to merge for consolidation (SBC and AT&T, AT&T and BellSouth). Current decline in the US economy has slightly decreased the pace of fixed-line and mobile telephony expansion, and the operators had to cut the rates for services to encourage subscriber base growth. Moreover, it's prepaid plans which have become more popular than postpaid ones.

Mobile market is strong, with penetration rates being higher than the average all over the world. 3G technology has flourished with operators enjoying the peak of its development. In the US the companies tend to get more profit from triple play, offering broadband, video and voice services in one pack. 4G deployment is also on the way, creating a new perspective for the market. VoIP technology is offered by some companies as part of their basic plans, and is also promoted by purely VoIP-specialized companies like Skype. The main market players are Verizon Wireless, which is extremely profitable in comparison to its competitors, Sprint-Nextel, characterized by the largest revenue per user and AT&T Mobility. Three of them account for the largest share in the market which is close to 80%. The fourth main player is T-Mobile, having over 10% of market share in its disposition. The rest is shared by smaller operators and MVNOs. The USA boasts the highest broadband penetration across the world, and benefits from deployment of different broadband technologies, including DSL, FttH, and their wireless alternatives like WiMAX, WiFi, WLAN and others.
